Leon Schidlowsky

Jorge León Schidlowsky Gaete, known as Leon Schidlowsky, was a multifaceted artist who made significant contributions to both music and visual art. Born in 1931, he would go on to become a prominent composer and painter, holding dual citizenship in Chile and Israel. His musical compositions spanned a wide range of genres and instruments, including orchestral, chamber, and choral works, as well as pieces for solo instruments such as the piano, violin, and guitar.
Throughout his career, Schidlowsky's music was performed internationally, with renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta and Hermann Scherchen leading orchestras in renditions of his work. Notably, about 65 of his pieces were written in graphic notation, a unique aspect of his compositional style. In addition to his work as a composer, Schidlowsky was also a dedicated educator, teaching composition in both Chile and Israel and inspiring a generation of students. His graphic scores have been exhibited in prominent museums, including the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen, a testament to the interdisciplinary nature of his art. Schidlowsky passed away in 2022, leaving behind a legacy as a innovative and influential figure in the world of music and art.
