Friedrich Gutmann

Holländischer Kunstsammler, umgebracht im Holocaust (1886-1944)

Friedrich Gutmann was a prominent figure in the Dutch banking sector, with a successful career in finance. Beyond his professional pursuits, he was also a discerning art collector, assembling a notable collection of artworks. His personal life was marked by a significant decision, as he converted from Judaism, a choice that would later have profound consequences.

Tragically, Gutmann's life was cut short when he and his wife were murdered by the Nazis in 1944. The German occupying forces also seized parts of his art collection, leaving a lasting impact on his family. The story of Gutmann's collection and his ultimately tragic fate has been documented by his grandson, Simon Goodman, in the book "The Orpheus Clock", published in 2015. Through this account, the legacy of Friedrich Gutmann and the tumultuous events that shaped his life continue to be remembered and reflected upon.
