Hans-Joachim Schoeps

Hans-Joachim Schoeps was a German historian and academic, born in 1909, who specialized in the field of literature with a focus on the history of religion and religious philosophy. His academic career led him to become a professor at the University of Erlangen, where he taught religions and religious history. This position reflected his expertise and interest in the interdisciplinary study of religion and its historical development.

Schoeps' life and work were also marked by his involvement in political and social organizations. Notably, before World War II, he was the leader of The German Vanguard, a group consisting of 150 Jewish students. This organization was characterized by its national conservative and anti-Zionist stance, with its members seeking complete assimilation into the German nation. Schoeps passed away in 1980, leaving behind a legacy of academic contributions to the understanding of religious history and philosophy.
