US-amerikanischer Philologe
Max Leopold Margolis was a distinguished American linguist and historian of Lithuanian Jewish descent. His educational background was diverse, having attended elementary school in his hometown, the Leibniz gymnasium in Berlin, and later Columbia University in New York City. This foundation in education ultimately led to his specialization in Semitic languages, a field in which he would make significant contributions throughout his career.
Margolis' academic career spanned several institutions, including Columbia University, where he held a fellowship in Semitic languages, and the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati, where he taught Hebrew language and Biblical exegesis. He later joined the University of California, rising through the ranks to become head of the Semitic department. In 1909, he was appointed Professor of Biblical Philology at Dropsie College, a position he held until his death in 1932.
