Michael Tilson Thomas was a multifaceted American musician, excelling as a conductor, composer, and pianist. His career spanned several decades, during which he held prominent positions with various orchestras. Notably, he served as the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra from 1971 to 1979. He also founded the New World Symphony in 1987, an orchestral academy based in Miami Beach, Florida, where he was artistic director until 2022.

Thomas's conducting repertoire was diverse, with a particular emphasis on the works of Gustav Mahler and contemporary American composers. He was instrumental in introducing audiences to the music of notable American composers, including Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, and Steve Reich, through his recordings.
