Eli Siegel
Latvian-American poet, philosopher (1902–1978)
Eli Siegel was a Latvian-American poet, philosopher, and educator, born in 1902. He made significant contributions to the field of philosophy, founding the Aesthetic Realism movement, which is based in New York City. Through his work, Siegel explored the interconnectedness of all things, positing that every person, place, or thing shares a commonality with others. This central idea of Aesthetic Realism is reflected in his poetic works, which demonstrate his unique perspective on the world.
Siegel's literary output includes two notable volumes of poetry: Hot Afternoons Have Been in Montana: Poems and Hail, American Development. The title poem of his first volume, in particular, exemplifies the core principle of Aesthetic Realism. As a poet, writer, critic, and educator, Siegel's work spanned multiple disciplines, and his philosophical movement continues to be associated with New York City. He passed away in 1978, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent figure in 20th-century philosophy and poetry.
