Lippmann Moses Büschenthal
deutscher Rabbiner und Schriftsteller
Lippmann Moses Büschenthal was a prominent figure in the Haskalah movement, a Franco-German rabbi who also made significant contributions to literature as a poet and dramatist. Born on 12 May 1782, in Bischheim, a town in the Alsace region near Strasbourg, Büschenthal's life would be marked by both his religious and literary pursuits. In 1799, he married Debora Auerbach, a granddaughter of the esteemed Rabbi David Sinzheim, and together they had four children.
Büschenthal's career and personal life took him across various cities in Europe. After a brief period in Paris in 1807, he relocated from Alsace to Germany, initially settling in Neuwied and then in Elberfeld, where he worked as an editor for a newspaper. His travels continued, with stints in Vienna and Breslau, before he finally made Berlin his home shortly before his death. Throughout his journeys, Büschenthal remained engaged with his literary and rabbinical pursuits, leaving a lasting impact on the Haskalah movement and the literary world.
