Oscar Straus (composer)

österreichischer Operettenkomponist (1870-1954)

Oscar Straus was a prominent Viennese composer, born in 1870 and active in the music field until his death in 1954. His diverse compositional output included operettas, film scores, and songs, showcasing his versatility as a musician. Straus also explored other genres, producing a significant body of work in chamber music, orchestral and choral compositions, and cabaret songs, with the latter totaling around 500 pieces.

Straus's career was marked by a deliberate distinction from the renowned Strauss family of Vienna, as evident in his decision to drop the final 's' from his original surname. Despite this, he did seek guidance from Johann Strauss II, who in 1898 advised him to focus on writing for the theatre, a more lucrative pursuit than composing waltzes. Heeding this advice, Straus went on to establish himself as a successful composer in his own right, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of music.
